GREEN GABLES ADVENTURE RETREAT

Please read this document carefully so that you follow the correct procedure for application.

Details

Gary Schmidt will host this retreat, which begins Sunday, October 4, 2020, at 4:30 PM, and concludes Saturday, October 10, 2020, at noon. There will be no formal class time or lectures. Our Green Gables retreat is for self-directed students looking for a unique writing experience. The days are spent working on your projects and evenings will consist of group dinners and conversations about craft and industry. Students are expected to participate in the retreat in its entirety. Gary will meet with each student privately for a total of 60 minutes over the course of the week.

Event Size

The retreat requires a minimum of eight students, and we will accept no more than 14.

Student Bio
and Synopsis

Each application must contain a short bio sharing your experience in the industry, what you hope to gain from this retreat, and what you will be working on while attending. Each application must also include a synopsis of your project in-progress, or a work plan, so we understand your professional focus for the week. You do not need to be published to be considered for this event, but we are looking for committed, self-motivated writers, illustrators or publishing professionals. Gary will read all the applications, and we will inform you whether or not you have been accepted.

Cost, Deposit, & Refunds

Tuition rates range from US $2,200 - $2,750 U.S. depending on whether you choose a shared or single room.

Tuition covers our host’s fees, lodging, two Anne of Green Gables destinations and all food served at the Inn. Participants are responsible for travel costs, food and beverage outside of the inn.

There is a US $500 application fee. If applicants are not selected for the retreat, we can either return or shred the check. Tuition payments may be made in full, or in two, three or four installments. Checks will only be deposited once we have eight registered students. Students must be paid in full by June 1, 2020.

Refund Policy:

  • The $500 application fee is non-refundable once applicants are accepted. If an applicant withdraws, and we can fill the spot, applicants may apply 50% of the deposit towards another event.

  • After June 1, 2020, tuition is 50% refundable, unless we can fill the spot from our wait list. If we can fill the spot, applicants will be refunded full tuition, minus $700 ($500 application fee and a $200 penalty for late withdrawal).

  • After August 15, 2020, tuition is non-refundable, unless we can fill the spot from our wait list. If we can fill the spot, applicants will be refunded full tuition, minus $700 ($500 application fee and a $200 penalty for late withdrawal).

Lodging

The Montgomery Inn

Three room options are available at the Montgomery Inn:

  • One queen room with private bath

  • Two queen rooms with one shared bath in the hall

  • Three twin rooms with two beds and a shared bathroom in the room

  • Twin rooms can be turned into king rooms with private baths, but the student in that room will need to cover the cost of two students.

In the event that we fill the Montgomery Inn, we will rent a house across the street. This house contains one queen room and three twin rooms.

Additional
Logistics
Information

Please note: There is no public transportation in Prince Edward Island nor are there Ubers or taxis. Our location on the island is gorgeous, and students will enjoy long walks in nature. Students who wish to have the freedom to travel on their own should plan on driving or renting a car. Students who do not wish to rent a car may pay, additionally, for airport pickup. We will arrange these pick ups. We will be renting one, or two, minivans to transport all our students to our various destinations.

  • We have done our best to keep the pricing for our Green Gables event as low as possible.

  • When not meeting with students, Gary Schmidt will be privately working and writing. Please respect that Gary is participating in our retreat as much as you are.

  • Outside of our scheduled events, students may explore the island at their convenience. While this is a writing retreat, we understand that the beauty of the island beckons.
