Do you often wonder what makes a book so powerful? A scene? A moment? Subtext offers power to our words, often through a secondary meaning simmering underneath the surface that adds depth to our words.

Sometimes when writing doesn’t land it’s because the work hasn’t captured the motives, thoughts, emotions, and human truths that resonate with readers. The work doesn’t inspire us to look closer, analyze and interpret. Quite simply, the work is missing deeper layers of meaning.

Using examples from multiple popular works of fiction, Laurie will look at the many ways you can use subtext to add meaning beneath your words. You’ll engage in writing exercises that will also help you infuse subtext in your own stories, resulting in passages that are more complex, more nuanced and more sophisticated.
